Files on there also get deleted after a certain timeframe, which upsets me deeply as someone with an interest in lost media.
if you come across a link to an image on discord that's broken, you can usually temporarily revive it by just pasting the link into any discord channel

none of us grew up mentally that's why we play minecraft and watch cartoons and post on forums
What's weird is that I've never really used forums in my childhood, but I still prefer them over social medias.
Why is it when something becomes really old it's all of a sudden cool again?
Old is gold, Pal. Old is gold.
I actually signed up and used forums quite a bit when I was younger, my first forum was the one for the game Feralheart. Now people just make Discords for stuff. Discord is more like an instant message, so I don't like it very much. Files on there also get deleted after a certain timeframe, which upsets me deeply as someone with an interest in lost media.
Forums are both a social media and archive at the same time. For example, whenever I visit the Feralheart forums, I go all the way back to posts made after the game just released back in 2011! Sometimes when looking for answers to a problem I'm having, there's an old forum post from someone who had the very same issue and got it resolved, woohoo!
On Discord though, you can only scroll back so far. Something I forgot to mention earlier is how EVERYTHING these days requires Discord. Oh, is your website code acting up? Join our Discord and we can help you!
WHY. DOES. ALL. INFORMATION. THESE. DAYS. HAVE. TO. BE. GATED. BEHIND. A. DISCORD!?
Uhm, I think we've gone off-topic...
1000% agree
I hate discord beyond belief. Their moderation is trash. I'd very much rather jump in a piranha pit than use it. Yet all my friends use it so... that's a problem.
Most of the dark and messed up stuff I've seen is through discord.
But yeah I agree with you completely, some guy from 10 years ago on reddit or stackoverflow will have the answers to a problem usually lol. But I haven't really had the problem of having to join a discord for answers.

Convince them to use XMPP. This is a genuine honest to god suggestion. I think it'd be a lot more popular if people knew about it.
The current software combination I use for chatting is my XMPP client, for text chat and files, and Mumble for voice chat.

True discord is basically a wave of lost media servers
